LUCA Appeals
You know a housing unit exists, but the Census Bureau says it doesn't. What do you do now? Appeal the decision.
Why Go to the Trouble?
This is your final shot to get a correct housing unit count. You cannot come back once Census data is tallied. Even if people were missed, if the housing unit in question was not on the master address file, you are out of luck.
Things to Know
- An agency independent of the Census Bureau will review and decide on all appeals
- The timeframe to submit appeals is tentatively scheduled for September 2009 to December 2009.
- All appeals must be adjudicated prior to Census Day (April 1, 2010) to ensure that the housing unit is visited during the enumeration phase.
- Local governments must submit individual addresses with structure locations (such as lat/long coordinates) regardless of whether it's a city-style or noncity-style address. The reasoning for this is that if the Census Bureau couldn't find a housing structure the first time around, it needs a little extra help from you to find it the second time.
